About SCORE

The Social Cohesion and Reconciliation (SCORE) Index is a smart and versatile assessment tool designed to measure different components of social cohesion as well as resilience capacities and vulnerability factors around the world in order to inform the efforts of peacebuilding and development actors with robust and scientific evidence. In order to achieve this ambitious goal, SCORE's departure point is Social COhesion and REconciliation, and the intricate relationship between them - as reflected in the name of the index itself.

However, these two concepts are big and complex, and with intricate relationships between different domains from governance and services to human security, from intergroup relations to civic attitudes and psychological wellbeing. Moreover, both social cohesion and reconciliation calls for considerations of REsilience, as sustaining peace and sustainable development goals cannot be achieved without improving our understanding and assessment of resilience capacities and vulnerability factors. In other words, while social cohesion and reconciliation are the end goals, our journey needs to build resilience for our end goals to be transformative and sustainable.

Beyond calibrating and tailoring these domains and their ingredients (e.g. indicators, sub-indicators), SCORE also looks at culturally specific components from adversities to opportunities, as well as demographic particularities that vary across different contexts and help complete and enrich the analysis. SCORE has an ever-growing library of indicators that boasts more than 200 measurement metrics. This online platform supports the process of making the SCORE research findings more accessible and digestible, and allows the users to easily understand the major research findings and explore specific issues in more depth.

This online platform supports the process of making the SCORE research approachable and pertinent and allows the users to easily understand the major research findings and explore specific issues in more depth. The flexibility and versatility of the SCORE tool makes it unique in the field of peace-building. Its potential uses and benefits are numerous from highlighting national policy needs, to informing international donor decisions, to providing researchers with a rich source of data and the larger public with an overview of important issues in their society.

More details on how SCORE is calibrated in each country can be found under the relevant methodology tab of the country page for each region and data stream. Please note that the calibration and sampling approach changes depending on the region (e.g. eastern) or data stream (e.g. adolescents).

Do you want to see SCORE in your country?

SCORE was developed in Cyprus through the joint efforts of the Centre for Sustainable Peace and Democratic Development (SeeD) and UNDP-ACT with USAID funding. SCORE is designed as a very adaptable tool that is well-suited for multi-ethnic societies that have experienced conflict and are now facing simultaneous peace-building and state-building challenges. If you wish to see SCORE being rolled out in a specific country please contact the SCORE team through the Contact Us section.
